Barcelona will be unable to resign Lionel Messi from Paris Saint-Germain due to the club’s present financial predicament, according to La Liga president Javier Tebas on Wednesday.

Messi, 35, is set to leave PSG at the end of the season and has been extensively connected with a return to the Camp Nou, with Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski expressing his desire to play alongside him next season.

As the Catalan giants suffered financially, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner left Barcelona in 2021.

“Today, he could not (be registered in La Liga), but there is still time,” Tebas said during a press conference.

“We will not change the financial control rules approved by the clubs in order to register Messi… even if it is our wish that he returns to our league.”

Barcelona might potentially balance the books by selling players, according to Tebas.

According to the daily Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona has a “firm intention of bringing in Lionel Messi” this summer on a two-year contract.

Messi has struggled to replicate his best form in Paris, scoring 31 goals in 69 appearances and was booed earlier this month by PSG fans.
