Dani Alves will be held in prison after being denied bail

Dani Alves, a former Brazil defender, will remain in prison after being denied bail on Monday, as the investigation into a sexual assault allegation continues.

The 40-year-old was arrested in January 2023 for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman on December 30, 2022, in a Barcelona nightclub.

The allegation came with some consequences, one of which was the termination of his contract with Mexican club Pumas UNAM.

The Barcelona court has repeatedly denied the defense’s request that Alves be released on bail while the investigation is ongoing. One such refusal occurred in February, with the most recent occurring last month.

On Monday, the judge ordered Alves’ remand after reviewing video evidence presented by the defence showing alleged flirting with the accuser.

However, the court dismissed this evidence, ruling that flirting should not “in any way justify an eventual sexual assault.”

Alves is still being held and has reportedly been declared a flight risk, despite the defense’s willingness to surrender his passports and install a tracking device.

Alves won 42 football titles, including three Champions Leagues and two Copa Americas with Barcelona.

He competed in his third World Cup in Qatar last year.
