INEC Postpones Elections In 10 Polling Units In VGC

FastNews Nigeria reports that the gubernatorial and state assembly elections scheduled for Saturday in 10 polling places in Victoria Garden City (VGC) near the Lekki region of the state have been postponed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

When speaking to reporters at the VGC, INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner Segun Agbaje made the statement.

He claimed that Saturday’s ad hoc staff of corps members was reluctant to approach the VGC estate because they felt like they had been held hostage during the February 25 Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Agbaje stated that on Saturday, the commission’s ad hoc employees set up voting materials outside the estate, but the estate’s occupants alleged that hoodlums might interfere with the election, making them feel unsafe and preventing them from voting.

During his interview with Channels Television, he said the situation was difficult for security agents to contain hence he and his team had to come to the area.

“We have eight polling units here with 6,024 registered voters and out of which 5,624 people have their PVCs,” he stated, adding that two other polling units at the estate’s main gate were also affected. “Eight here (in the estate) and two outside,” he noted.

“After due consultation and further directive from the national headquarters that we should remobilise here tomorrow (Sunday) morning by 08:30am to conduct the elections.

“By 08:30am tomorrow (Sunday), we will reconvene here.”

According to Agbaje, the estate’s chairman of the security committee informed the commission that both corps members and INEC employees, as well as voters, would be kept secure.

PU 032, 033, PU 119–124, and others are among the affected voting units.

Action Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship candidate Tunde Doherty criticized INEC for the inadequate planning, calling the circumstances “unfortunate.” Tunde Doherty’s polling place is in the VGC.
